What are device types?

Read these FAQs to learn more about device types for LastPass Free.

    What is a device type?

LastPass Free has two (2) device types – Computers (which includes all web browsers running on desktops and laptops) or Mobile Devices (which includes all iOS/Android phones, smart watches, and tablets).
    Computers Mobile Devices
Desktops and laptops (Windows, macOS, Linux) iOS and Android phones
    Windows tablets Smart watches
The LastPass browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Safari)
Note: Chromebooks using the LastPass web browser extension are counted as a "Computers" device type.
    Tablets (iPads, Android tablets)
Note: Chromebooks using the LastPass app are counted as a "Mobile" device type.

Device type does not refer to the number of devices or operating systems being used to access LastPass, but rather the nature of those devices. LastPass Free users can use LastPass on an unlimited number of devices within their one active device type (either computers only or mobile devices only).

    Example:

    • A LastPass Free user with Computers as their active device type could use LastPass on their personal laptop and work desktop, but they would not be able to use LastPass on their phone unless they upgrade to LastPass Premium or Families for unlimited device type access.
    • A LastPass Free user with Mobile Devices as their active device type could use LastPass on their iPhone, work-issued Android phone, iPad, and iWatch, but they would not be able to use LastPass on their desktop or laptop unless they upgrade to LastPass Premium or Families for unlimited device type access.

What is the difference between a device and device type?

Device refers to a single physical piece of equipment that you’re using to access LastPass (like your personal iPhone or work-issued laptop). Device type, on the other hand, refers to an entire class of devices, specifically any computer or any mobile device. LastPass Free users can use LastPass on an unlimited number of devices within their one active device type.

What is an "active" device type?

Active device type refers to the class of devices you’ve chosen to access LastPass – either Computers or Mobile Devices.

Starting March 16, 2021, LastPass Free only includes access to LastPass on one type of device. LastPass Free users can continue using one device type, or upgrade to LastPass Premium or Families for unlimited device type access.

    What is device type access?

Device type access refers to where you want to log in and access your LastPass account. Starting March 16, 2021, LastPass Free only includes access to one type of device (computer or mobile), whereas LastPass Premium and Families will continue to include unlimited device type access.
Note: All devices sync automatically for each user, so LastPass Free users will not lose access to anything stored in their vault, regardless of which device they use to access their LastPass account.

How many devices and device types can I use LastPass Free on?

With LastPass Free, you can use LastPass on an unlimited number of devices of one device type (computers or mobile devices).

    Here's how it works:

    • If you choose Computers as your active device type, you can access LastPass on as many desktop computers and laptops as you want.
    • If you choose Mobile Devices as your active device type, you can access LastPass on as many iOS/Android phones, tablets, and smart watches as you want.
Note: As always, you can save an unlimited number of passwords, secure notes, and items.

To use an unlimited number of devices for both device types, you must upgrade to LastPass Premium or Families.

How many times can I change my active device type?

You can switch your active device type up to a maximum of 3 times between Computers and Mobile Devices. After the third switch, you’ll be able to use LastPass Free on the last device type used, but will no longer be able to use LastPass on the other device type.

If you want to access LastPass on both device types, you must upgrade to LastPass Premium or LastPass Families.

Where can I see my active device type, and how many switches I have left?

You can view this information within your account from both computers and mobile devices.

I've changed my active device type 3 times, what happens now?

After the third switch, you can use LastPass Free on the last device type used. This means you can use LastPass on either all computers or all mobile devices, but not both.

If you want to access LastPass on both device types, you must upgrade to LastPass Premium or LastPass Families.
